Barcelona have decided to abandon their pursuit of Julián Álvarez, according to beIN Sports, with the Catalan club concluding that conditions are no longer in place to complete a deal. Atlético Madrid remain unwilling to negotiate with a direct domestic rival, leaving the Argentine forward on course to stay under Diego Simeone for the foreseeable future.
How the saga reached this point
Álvarez had expressed a desire to play for Barcelona, but Atlético have remained unwilling to negotiate a deal with the Catalan club. With the new season fast approaching, that stance has effectively decided the matter for now.

Álvarez has already begun following Atlético’s individualized training programme for international players ahead of officially joining preseason. Although he is still enjoying the final days of his vacation, the Argentine forward is following a personalized fitness plan. He remains in contact with the club and is expected to report as scheduled.
Atlético’s complaint changed the calculus
One major factor in Barcelona’s withdrawal was Atlético’s formal complaint to the Royal Spanish Football Federation, alongside an approach to FIFA, over alleged unauthorized contact between Barcelona and Álvarez’s representatives – a practice generally known as tapping up. Atlético also accused the Catalan club of trying to destabilize the striker, with an investigation into the allegations underway and both clubs expected to present their version of events.
Facing that scenario, Barcelona chose to end all negotiations rather than risk further escalation. Atlético have reiterated that they will not entertain offers from Barcelona regardless of the fee on the table.
Barcelona feel covered up front
Part of Barcelona’s calculation is that the urgency has eased. The club feels well covered in attack following the signing of Anthony Gordon, reducing the pressure to force through a move that beIN Sports describes as virtually impossible.

Arsenal’s interest has cooled too
With Barcelona effectively out of the race, the international market offers few immediate alternatives for Álvarez. Arsenal, previously heavily linked with the World Cup winner, have also lost momentum in their pursuit, making the Premier League side less of a threat to Atlético’s plans for now.
Atlético acknowledge that a massive offer from elsewhere in the Premier League could still shift the situation while the transfer window remains open. For the moment, though, keeping hold of one of their biggest stars is the priority, while Álvarez looks to move past a summer dominated by speculation and refocus on the pitch.
