For the most part, Sunday’s match between Real Madrid and Barcelona was good-tempered, but it ended on a sour note. Players and coaching staff from the two teams clashed after the full time whistle at the Santiago Bernabeu, and the ramifications of this is now known.
As per Diario AS, the referee report of Cesar Soto Grado has been revealed, showing that there was one red card and six yellows dished out during the post-match scuffle. The player dismissed was Real Madrid backup goalkeeper Andriy Lunin, who was sent off “for leaving his bench towards the opponent’s bench, in an aggressive attitude, having to be held down by his own teammates”.
The six yellow cards were shared between Real Madrid and Barcelona players equally, as the hosts’ Brazilian trio of Eder Militao, Rodrygo Goes and Vinicius Junior were all cautioned alongside the visitors’ Alejandro Balde, Fermin Lopez and Ferran Torres.
Lunin will miss out against Valencia
As a result of being sent off, Lunin will not be available to Xabi Alonso for Real Madrid’s match against Valencia next weekend, also at the Bernabeu. This is not currently a massive blow, but in the event of Thibaut Courtois picking up an injury in the lead-up to the fixture, it would be disastrous. As such, the club may need to wrap their Belgian goalkeeper in cotton wool over the coming week, especially as his injury record is far from ideal.
Lunin’s dismissal was the only blip on an excellent afternoon for Real Madrid, who returned to winning ways in El Clasico courtesy of goals from Kylian Mbappe and Jude Bellingham. They are now five points clear at the top of the La Liga standings, and that could stretch to eight next weekend – temporarily at least – as they play before Barcelona.
